What the desert does to tile and grout
The City of Phoenix 2025 water quality report puts total hardness across the system at 172 to 302 ppm, which is roughly 10 to 17.6 grains per gallon, with total dissolved solids between 464 and 716 ppm. That mineral load does not stay in the water. In an environment this dry it evaporates fast and leaves the calcium and magnesium behind on shower glass, fixtures, and the grout around them, which is why scale builds back within days of a cleaning here rather than over months.
The most common damage we are called to undo in the East Valley is self-inflicted and completely understandable. A homeowner sees hard-water crust, reaches for vinegar or a calcium remover, and the acid does exactly what it is supposed to do. It dissolves the mineral deposit, and it keeps going into the cement grout and any calcium-based stone underneath. On marble, travertine, or limestone tile that leaves a dull, roughened patch that no amount of further cleaning will bring back.
Humidity here swings hard as well, from around 5% in early summer to well above 80% during the monsoon window between June 15 and September 30. Those swings push moisture through slabs and mortar beds, and moisture is what carries mineral salts to the surface as efflorescence. It is also why a topical, non-breathable sealer is a genuinely poor idea in this climate: trap the moisture below the surface and the salt crystals grow underneath the coating instead of on top of it, and that pressure can spall the surface apart. Anything we apply here stays vapor-permeable.
Surface temperatures above 105°F matter for a more practical reason. Chemistry and sealers flash off before they have time to work, so summer work gets sectioned into small areas, re-wet before it is wiped, and held to the manufacturer's cure window rather than the schedule anyone would prefer.
