Territorial and Mediterranean-influenced homes sometimes have coated Saltillo or clay tile. If the finish is dark, peeling or worn at the entry, the conversation is about stripping and refinishing. More coating on top won’t help. Mechanical honing and polishing is for bare stone floors and plays no part here.

Scottsdale homes use travertine well beyond the floor: entries, showers, fireplace surrounds and hearths. Most of what we see is worn finish, etching from acidic cleaners and open filler. These photos come from our travertine work in Mesa and Chandler.
Hole filling
Open pits and popped filler are the most common travertine complaint we hear in Scottsdale. We clean out the loose material, refill with a color-matched filler and hone it flush so the repair sits level with the stone.
Cracked tile repair
A crack across a tile, or a tile that sounds hollow, is a bond problem underneath. We cut out the damaged tile, prepare the setting bed and set a replacement, then blend it into the floor.
Lippage removal
Raised tile edges catch light, dirt and toes. Grinding the high edges flush gives the floor one flat plane before it is honed and polished.
Etch removal, honing and polishing
Dull traffic lanes and etch marks from acidic cleaners are surface damage. Diamond honing removes them, then the floor is polished or left honed, whichever finish you choose.
Travertine cleaning and sealing
When the stone is sound but dirty, a deep clean pulls soil out of the holes and grout. We test absorption afterward and seal where it will make a difference.
